An $18 bet has turned one punter into a millionaire after Justify’s win in the Kentucky Derby, while another punter won $150,000 after reportedly overhearing a tip.
Margaret Reid placed a $18 Pick 5, an extended equivalent of the quaddie we have in Australia, at the Retama Park race track in Selma, Texas.
She selected the final five winners of the Churchill Downs card, Limousine Liberal ($5.50), Maraud ($8), Funny Duck ($41), Yoshida ($7.5) and Kentucky Derby winner Justify ($4.30).
Her total collect was $1.2 million, an instantly life-changing collect for the regular racegoer.
“It was an amazing feeling yes, that you won really big, like a really big ticket,” Reid told CBS San Antonio affiliate KENS-TV.
She said she plans to invest the money and pay for her daughter’s college tuition but will continue taking her Pick 5 bets, something she does anytime she attends the races.
“It doesn’t always work out, but sometimes it does,” she said.
Reid was in the sports bar of the racetrack, cheering Justify home.
“The whole bar went nuts,” Retama Park owner Bill Belcher told mySanAntonio.com.
“The odds are unbelievable, and the payout was so big. She was very excited.”
Another punter collected $150,000 on Justify’s win after placing $500 on the colt at odds of $301 before his debut win in February.
It has been reported that the savvy punter overheard a tip on the horse ahead of his dominant debut win at Santa Anita and took the Derby odds.
Professional gambler Bill Krackomberger revealed the details in his column for Gaming Today.
"One of my buddies received a call four days prior to the race in which Justify broke his maiden. He was told, “Bob Baffert (trainer) thinks he has a monster of a horse and will point him toward the Kentucky Derby if everything goes correctly.”
My friend repeated the story out loud when he hung up the phone; and one of the guys around him, (a so-called friend of his) heard it. This “friend” showed up a few days later with a Derby futures ticket on Justify to win at 300/1 ($500 to win $150,000).
Now my friend puts a claim in to his “friend” and says, “Hey, I told you about that horse, I deserve a piece of that ticket.” But the other guy claims he got a call the next day with the same horse and that is why he made the bet.
